New Year's Resolution #1: Clean out the Closet!

One of the reasons that I stay in my small one bedroom apartment is the closet. As far as New York City closets go, it's a large one with an eight foot long pole for hanging clothes and floor to ceiling shelves behind it, not to mention a storage area on top on the entire thing. Of course that means that clothing can be put away, never to be seen from again. Which poses a problem when one actually wants to find something! My number one New Year's resolutions is to clean out the black hole of apparel. I've already donated and given away a lot and now I'm selling the good stuff on eBay. Looking at these chic closets is giving me motivation to keep going until the task is finally completed! If cleaning out the closet is on your list of resolutions, I hope they inspire you as well!

Vivre founder Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti has Rolls Royce of closets that I think is the favorite of every blogger!

I hope Eva pays her cleaning woman well because I have a feeling that she helps keep the closet so tidy and organized!

I hope I have this much beautiful jewelry someday and an equally beautiful bureau to stash it all!

Rory Tahari also an equally neat closet. I think the colorful clothes must reside in a different section.

Funny how all woman and Padma Lakshmi above, have so many pairs of jeans when we usually wear the same pair all the time. Statistics say we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. Another reason to clean out what you don't wear and probably never will!

I wonder if the closet in Olivia Palermo's closet is bigger that her last one. She has an enviable wardrobe and style in spades!

Rachel Zoe looks like she could straighten up her closet a little but I guess she is too busy styling stars to bother!

The LA closet of Sally Perrin is also filled with vintage finds just like those of Olivia and Rachel.

You could probably eat off the floor in Heather Kerzner's closet, it's that clean!

One of the best closets belongs to Julie Janklow. She and her husband Luke supposedly took their townhouse off the market so she gets to enjoy it a little longer!

Another favorite belongs to fashionista and fashion designer Tory Burch. I think the doors are chic but I like to be able to see everything I own. The center island would come in handy though!

This client of Steven Gambrel has two islands! I'm assuming they are his and hers. So jealous! Those leather handles are to die for!

Olivia Chantecaille was married last year so I wonder if she also moved and has a new closet now. I would have asked her when I saw her shopping in Flair a few months ago but I'm not that nosy!

Then there are those for whom a closet doesn't offer enough space and they create an entire dressing room. Jenna Lyons of J.Crew has a pretty spectacular one!

Kate Lee Joel also had an enviable closet papered in real gold leaf.

Wonder what her closet looks like now that she's getting divorced and probably moved out.

Aerin Lauder has one of the most coveted closets in blogland due to the Gracie wallpaper. I personally love juxtaposition of the pretty paper and the vintage Italian gold desk from the 1970's designed by Gabriella Crespi.

Another pretty wallpapered closet belongs to Charlotte boutique owner Laura Vinroot Poole.

There are still rumblings that Tinsely and Topper Mortimer are getting divorced. If so, I hope she gets the apartment since the blue and white wallpaper are a bit girly for Topper!

A way to save on costs is to just wallpaper one wall as interior designer Erinn Valencich has done.

Or you could wallpaper a small closet and it's door like this one seen in Domino magazine.

Don't forget the little people when decorating closets with wallpaper! I love what Ruthie Sommers did to her daughters' closet. And after looking at these pretty papers, maybe I do want to move so I can wallpaper my own closet! We'll have to work on that! Happy Cleaning!

Under Construction!

PLEASE PARDON OUR APPEARANCE! THE BLOG IS BEING REMODELED FOR YOUR FUTURE ENJOYMENT!

It's a New Year and with it comes a new look for Habitually Chic! I'm changing my blog format from two columns to three columns in order to accommodate new and exciting opportunities! Unfortunately, when you make such a switch, you lose all your widgets. I was joking with Christian from Maison21 that it's like taking a house down to the studs in order to rebuild it! It will be a time consuming process so I hope you will bear with me until I have everything back up again. This includes my Blog Roll which might take a few days to recreate! Thank you for your patience. Oh, and don't forget to wear your hard hat! Safety first!

The Real Slim Paley

Sometimes you find a blog that is so fantastic that you can't decide if you want to be the author, their best friend or pack your bags and show up on their doorstep and hope they don't call the police! I think I can unequivocally say that all three thoughts ran though my mind when I first read Slim Paley and saw her beautiful homes! The author is an interior designer who lives in Santa Barbara, CA with her husband and two boys. She has chosen to remain anonymous and I don't blame her. I did the same thing when I first started my blog because I wasn't sure how the designer I was working for at the time would respond. Just because someone wants to dip their toe into the blogging pool before jumping is no reason not to welcome them.

Slim Paley is a girl after my own heart who would rather curl up with a good book in her Sun Valley, Idaho house (above) than strap two sticks to her feet! She also has a wonderful sense of humor, one that is fun and self deprecating and doesn't make fun of others, except maybe her Pilates instructor! Once you see the photos of her, you'll see what I mean! Someone once asked me what I thought made a good blog and it's definitely one that makes you laugh while remaining professional. Speaking of professional, her travel photos could be considered professional! It's my dream to go on an African safari and I loved reading the account of her trip and seeing her fabulous photos. In a sea of design blogs, I think Slim Paley is going to quickly become one of your favorites. I know it's already one of mine! Enjoy!

Coming in 2010!

Happy New Year! Hope you had a great evening and first few days of the year!

I am SO excited about some of the bloggy events I have planned for 2010. I wanted to share the plan with you so you know what’s coming up.

The first is the Before and After Party, which I’ve decide to make a monthly event. It will take place on the first Monday of every month. All you need is a before picture and your final picture. It can be anything – a DIY project, organizing progress, crafts, whatever! I adore seeing transformations so this party has really been fun for me!

Get ready cause the first party of the year is this Monday, the  4th (I’ll actually have the linky up late on Sunday evening). Can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!

beforeAndAfterButton

I’ve got some great giveaways set up for the year, the first is this coming weekend. You will love it! I’m so excited because it’s different from any of the other giveaways I’ve done.

Which brings me to my next shindig – instead of the organizing party we did last year, I think a cleaning party is in order. It’s that time of year! ;) Join me on Monday, January 18th to share your favorite cleaning tips, products, etc:

I’ve already started decluttering (Toys!! Gah!), and soon I’ll begin the massive cleaning of our house I do every year. I’ll also take you through the process I use to declutter, clean and organize each room in our home.

And I’ll make you get rid of your crap. I will. Get ready. :)

Finally, throughout the year, at least monthly, I’ll school you in every little detail about the tools I use for my home improvement (and even some craft) projects. I hope to use lots of video for these posts, so I can really show you how to use the tools.

You’ll get to go to school, learn and not worry about passing a test! Woohoo! And if you skip class I won’t even know. Yesssss.

Well, that’s the big plans for the year! I’ve got some home projects I can’t wait to tackle, but first, I must go weed through more toys. They are multiplying. I’m not even kidding. Help.

New Year, New You!

If you fall asleep in the bathtub on New Year's Eve, this is probably how you will feel in the morning! As we begin this New Year, I am reminded of a quote from Anne of Green Gables, "Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet." But in this case, we have a whole year and more excitedly a whole decade with no mistakes in it yet! It is a great time to think about the bad habits we want to leave in 2009 and what we would like to accomplish in 2010! For some of you, that mean after your head stops throbbing but it's never too late!

I wrote about Write It Down, Make It Happen in my New Year’s Day post two years ago and I think it's worth talking about again. I often make lists of the things that I want to do and I think they definitely help me achieve my goals and keep myself on track. This book is filled with the inspirational stories that we can all use to motivate ourselves. Instead of focusing on the negative New Year's resolutions, it is definitely more fun to focus on the positive things you want to accomplish in 2010.
  1. I will continue to build my business and blog in 2010. I have a lot of great things in the works for 2010 and I can't wait to share them with you. I've worked really hard for the past two years and it's nice to finally see some rewards coming!
  2. I will find a business manager in 2010! I will find someone to help me with the aspects of my business that are better left to an expert! If I was interested in business, I would have majored in it instead of art history. I know where my strengths lie and this is not one of them!
  3. I will either move to a bigger apartment or get an office in 2010. I have fabric samples overtaking my apartment on a daily basis so it would be nice to more space for them! I have discussed sharing an office with a few other designers so that is another fun option. Working alone is hard for all of us and it would be nice to be able to bounce ideas off another person or just commiserate.
  4. I will figure out how to have someone help me in 2010. I have a lot of people offering to work for me but as some of you can relate, it's hard to let go and hard to figure out what to delegate when you have been doing all the work yourself. I don't think I could ever let someone else help me with my blog but it would be nice to have someone around to return fabric samples or write up purchase orders! Of course, this would be a lot easier with the office!
  5. I will travel more in 2010! I felt really guilty taking time off in 2009 since I was the one doing everything. If I have help and someone to mid the store, so to speak, while I'm gone, it would be easier to get away. Travel is so inspiring and motivating and I really need to make it a priority!
  6. I will make money from my blog in 2010! Contrary to popular belief, I don't make a lot of money off my blog but that is going to change in 2010! I'm making it a top priority!
  7. I will volunteer more in 2010! I support a lot of charities but I don't often have time to volunteer in person. It is my goal this year to follow through on my plan to create a Habitually Chic Cares volunteer day where my readers and I can make a difference for a local organization!
  8. I will take a class in 2010! I keep saying that I am going to take a French class so I can improve my skills and finally become fluent and I hope I can make that happen this year!
  9. I will not sweat the small stuff in 2010! Nuff said!
  10. I will be really happy in 2010! I can already tell this is going to be a great year!

As my friends can attest, I am a big proponent of the power of positive thinking and on that note, I leave you with the following quote from Edith Lovejoy Pierce, "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day!

Xbox wheel hack

Happy 2010! Hope you're taking time out to ring in the new year. Or are you just chilling and playing games? Then, you should check out what Alejandro did with his Xbox. Thanks Rosa for sending it in.

"Recently my friend Alejandro was given an Xbox wheel as a present. At first he wanted to buy a PlaySeat, but it was way too expensive, so he decided to have a look at the Ikea catalog and here is the idea he came up with."

Alejandro says, "I had a look at the Ikea catalog and decided to buy the following:
- Pello chair (€25, $49.99)
- Dave laptop table (€19.95, $17.99)
- Brada laptop support (€3.99, $2.49)

The only thing I had to do was to puncture a hole in the Brada support and pass the table's central leg through it. Then I used a couple of screws to attach the pedals to the Brada.

At first the table was leaning, but I balanced it using the pedals. I'm very pleased with the result! All for about €50 euros or $70! Plus, when you are not using the wheel you have a very comfortable chair to read or watch TV (as you don't hack the chair or attach it to the table, you can still use it on its own). And even better, the table is adjustable in height, so you can skip buying the Pello, save a few bucks, and use any chair or sofa you already have at home (and then you'd only spend €25 / $20)."
