a russian ikea hack site

alya sent me this bit of news about a new russian community on LiveJournal called art ikea dedicated to ikea hacks.

not many mods yet but i like this beautiful version of the fira mini-chest by a LiveJournal user isterix.

thanks, alya!

computer chassi in a sture

only after i started this blog did i find out how often ikea is used with computer thingamajigs. now that i think of it, it only seems natural for people who tinker with computers to tinker with furniture.

this one is from tobias jansson who hacked this about a year ago. he converted one of the drawers in a sture (now discontinued) cabinet to a computer-chassi.

forum updates

this should be fun!

we've all heard (or personally experienced) ikea's quality or lack of it, so i started a new watercooler thread for us to share our first ikea. let us know what was your first ikea purchase and how it is holding up, if it still is. i've posted my first ikea. click here to post yours.

jmat also started the ikea tales thread. if you have interesting, funny, bizzare or heartwarming experiences at the blue & yellow mothership, do share it with us.

elsewhere at the forums, lots of folks needing ideas and advice. do you have any experience ...
> mounting stolmen poles to the wall?
> staining the magiker a shade darker?
> lowering a tromso loft bed?
> raising the height or reducing the width of the oppli tv bench?
> decoupaging fabric on a lack side table?

or if you have ...
> ideas for a fabric cutting table?
> a fiona apron for sale?

pink weiner bench

greg allen of daddytypes tipped me on this cute weiner bench. when i first looked at it i went "weiner what?"

jackrabbit, the artist who made this explained on her etsy site that the weiner bench is for you (or more likely your kid) to sit and scoot around the house. best thing is, the whole deal is made from smart recycling, or rather, upcycling.

the 369 weiners were crocheted from donated sweaters, the ikea lack side table which forms the base of the bench is covered with old t-shirts and attached with wheels from an old filing cabinet.

i must say the results are pretty funky. would you fork out $1,500 for it?

snap previews anywhere removed

okay, i get it. snap previews suck. so i've taken them down.
thanks everyone, for guiding me back to the light. :)

angelique's pretty storage chests

i received a few pretty hacks from angelique who transformed plain pine toy boxes into really good looking storage. i love the fern technique and the decoupage of the mother and baby bird is just too cute.

"purchased at ikea as a plain pine toy chest (can't find the link). i decorated it using an old victorian technique: stuck fern fronds to the wood surface using spray adhesive, then stippled around them with black paint and polyurethaned over the whole thing.

same technique on plain pine ikea frames.

another ikea toy chest, painted and decoupaged. this one is shallower than the fern chest so it is more like a bench, and the original finish was a dark stain. (note: ikea toy and curtains in this shot, too!)

the ubiquitous ikea kids' table and chairs, painted."

store 110 dvds in your tv bench

here's one from frau kollegin of vienna, hacking an old ikea tv bench to add in a drawer compartment. anyone knows the name of this discontinued tv bench?

the original bench

"i created a new tv bench - out of my old one. unfortunately ikea doesn't sell the original any more (we bought it about 7 years ago).

so, what did i do? i increased the height of the bench, so that the drawer i built can hold up to 110 dvds. than i assembled a few slats and boards, added trimmings and painted it." link.
