ikeahacker forums - now hosted at ikeafans

early last month, i pulled the plug on the ikeahacker forums due to spam and time commitments. but hey, when it's a good thing, you can't keep it down.

susan from ikeafans.com wrote me a few days ago and suggested a collaboration. i jumped onboard immediately because ikeafans is a wonderful community, moderated by people who know their ikea.

ikeafansso it is with much glee that i'm announcing this ... the ikeahacker forum is BACK!

all the answers you've been aching for - the right way to cut a lack shelf, replace a kitchen door hinge, dismantle a malm bed, find the right sized nuts and bolts - you now have a pool of over 17,000 ikeafans to help you figure it out.

feel free to post questions, exchange ideas, preview your hacks in progress. DulcineaK, otherwise known as the answer chick, will be moderating the forum. i will pop in and chime in my 2 cents whenever i can.

click here to get to the forum page. you will need to register to be part of the community. go join. it's as toasty as a cinnamon roll in there.

hugs to susan and james for making this possible!

the end of the ikeahacker forums

i feel sad announcing this but i've decided to pull the plug on the ikeahacker forums. when i launched it, i didn't know spam was a plague equal to locusts from biblical times.

i spent too much time everyday trying to swat every locust. then, i switched over to manual verification of new registrations. it stopped the spam but drove me nuts checking and verifying each email.

so as wonderful an idea as it was, the forums are not working out for me big time.

no worries, though, i won't leave you without help. the top place to run to when you need ikea advice is www.ikeafans.com. i've joined them for a bit and seriously, they rock. quick response, great advice and really fun people. in case you're wondering (as i was) they are not only into ikea kitchens. they also have a section on mods and all things ikea related.

another place you can post your questions is the forum at the ikeahacks group over at instructables. a lot of eyeballs at instructables, so the chances of you getting a good answer is high.

i'll keep the ikeahacker forums open till June 15. then, all threads will be locked but everyone will still be able to view the threads, as they do have some great info.

thanks 546 of you who joined the forums. to the more active users - mike, narf, courtney_beth, anaximander, jmat, cinematique, blatt, footemps, petra, joha, mrsensitive, melissa, jrotem, tiago.j.costa - thanks for contributing your time postings and offering help.

if you've just joined only to read this post, my apologies.

i guess the last straw just fell on my back.

forum updates

the forums were down for a bit last week due to a server upgrade. but it's up and running again.

on the matter of spam in the forums ... urgh ... i'm up to my eyeballs trying to keep them in check. spam bots are getting smarter by the minute. they now bypass user registration and even those graphic verification thingies which i currently have in place. i shudder to think what they will do next? take over the world?

me, a non-techie person and all, i need some ideas on how to get rid of them once and for all, if that is possible? or is there other forum / software / host that i should consider. any input much appreciated.

forum updates

this should be fun!

we've all heard (or personally experienced) ikea's quality or lack of it, so i started a new watercooler thread for us to share our first ikea. let us know what was your first ikea purchase and how it is holding up, if it still is. i've posted my first ikea. click here to post yours.

jmat also started the ikea tales thread. if you have interesting, funny, bizzare or heartwarming experiences at the blue & yellow mothership, do share it with us.

elsewhere at the forums, lots of folks needing ideas and advice. do you have any experience ...
> mounting stolmen poles to the wall?
> staining the magiker a shade darker?
> lowering a tromso loft bed?
> raising the height or reducing the width of the oppli tv bench?
> decoupaging fabric on a lack side table?

or if you have ...
> ideas for a fabric cutting table?
> a fiona apron for sale?

forum updates

hey, we're up to 42 members and 62 posts on the ikeahacker forums! woo! thanks everyone who registered and contributed to the forums. i'm learning lots from it.

there's an interesting discussion going on about stolmen poles and using them to mount a tv.

also, some questions still seeking solutions:
we've also received new submissions on the genius ikea hack contest. check them out and don't forget to post yours too. the contest is ending soon.

ikeahacker forums coming soon!

well, i've been working on a new thingamajig for ikeahacker. with the increase in traffic, i've been receiving quite a few hacks, hacker help questions and mail in general. which are all good. do keep them coming.

that said, i feel that i am a bottleneck to the process, especially the "hacker help" section. i currently post one or two hacker help questions per week, which simply translate to a long, long wait. very frustrating if you're looking for answers, like NOW!

so, in a day or two, depending on how much sleep i get, you will get to post your questions at the ikeahacker forums. it's not quite done yet, still some minor tweaks and should be ready to roll.

if you do have a question, please do hold off emailing it to me and wait for the forum launch.
